With the release of the August 2015 issue of V-Jump today in Japan, the Japanese website Natalie revealed the name of a new character that was previously shown on the official Dragon Ball Super website!

Dragon Ball Super Champa

Much like Birusu (ビルス) and Uisu (ウイス) (Beerus and Whis) are puns on alcoholic beverages (Beerus being a pun on beer and Whis being a pun on whiskey), the new character that is next to Beerus in the picture is named “Champa” (シャンパ). Kanzenshuu confirms that the “ch” in “Champa” is pronounced with a “sh” sound. With that said, “Champa” is most likely a pun on the word “Champagne”.

His Name is Champa!!
Revealed in the main visual!! Who the heck is this new character “Champa” that’s next to Beerus…?!

Toei Animation announced the production of Dragon Ball Super (Japanese title; tentative for English release), the first all-new Dragon Ball television series to be released in 18 years. Dragon Ball Super will begin in syndication on Sunday mornings on Fuji TV in Japan on July 5, 2015, with Norihito Sumitomo returning as its musical composer, and Tadayoshi Yamamuro as the series’ character designer. No information has been given regarding an international release. Although there is no definitive answer as to where exactly Dragon Ball Super will “fit into the Dragon Ball timeline”, we do know that Dragon Ball Super will, “follow the aftermath of Goku’s fierce battle with Majin Buu, as he attempts to maintain earth’s fragile peace”, and will be, “overseen by Dragon Ball’s original creator, Akira Toriyama”.
